Boniface Kariuki, a 22-year-old street vendor in Nairobi, has been declared brain dead after being shot at close range by police during anti-police brutality protests. His family confirmed that though his heart is still beating with life-support, doctors say his brain has ceased functioning.
Kariuki was caught in the crossfire during a protest on June 17 that was sparked by the death in detention of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang. Bullet fragments remain lodged in Kariuki’s brain despite several operations.
Public Fury Over Police Crackdown
News of Kariuki’s condition has intensified public anger over police tactics during recent nationwide protests. At least 19 people were killed during the demonstrations. Kenya’s Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen further inflamed tensions by labeling the protests “terrorism disguised as dissent,” and urging police to “shoot on sight” civilians attacking stations.
Rights groups and legal advocates have condemned his remarks, warning that they could fuel extrajudicial violence.
Accountability Demands Mount
Two police officers linked to Kariuki’s shooting have appeared in court but have not yet entered pleas. Meanwhile, six officers have been charged with murder in the death of Albert Ojwang, whose autopsy confirmed death by assault. The incident forced Deputy Police Chief Eliud Lagat to step aside, though he denies wrongdoing.
Kariuki’s family and many Kenyans continue to call for a full investigation and financial support for medical expenses, which have been overwhelming.
