Japan Eyes $508 Billion Defense Buildup Amid Regional Tensions
Japan is considering a major expansion of its military spending, with defense expenditures potentially reaching $508 billion over five years under a new national defense buildup plan, according to Reuters.
The proposed spending framework, covering fiscal years 2027 through 2031, is estimated at between $457 billion and $508 billion, marking a significant increase in Japan's long-term military investment.
The plan is expected to prioritize long-range missile systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, advanced defense technologies and improvements to Japan's military readiness.
The proposed buildup comes as Tokyo seeks to strengthen its deterrence capabilities amid China's expanding military presence in the Indo-Pacific and continued security concerns over North Korea's missile and nuclear programs.
Japan has been accelerating its defense modernization, including the acquisition of counterstrike capabilities and closer military coordination with the United States.
The spending figures remain under consideration and have not yet received final government approval.
