Crosetto stated that the occupation of Gaza and some grave acts in the West Bank mark a significant escalation that demands decisive responses from the global community. Asked about sanctions, he said such steps would not be directed against Israel as a state or its people but would serve to protect them from what he described as a government that has abandoned reason and humanity. Drawing a parallel to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Crosetto stressed the importance of distinguishing governments from nations, peoples, and religions when applying political measures.
The remarks followed Prime Minister Netanyahu’s defense of his plan to take control of Gaza City and dismantle remaining Hamas strongholds, a strategy that has triggered criticism worldwide. Crosetto warned that the plan risks worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis and increasing instability in the region.
Despite his criticism of Israel’s military actions, Crosetto defended Italy’s decision not to join other nations in recognizing a Palestinian state. He argued that recognizing “a state that doesn’t exist” could amount to a political provocation in an already fragile global environment. He emphasized that recognition should result from a negotiated process that ensures both viability and stability for a future Palestinian state.
