Italy has strongly condemned a recent Israeli military strike that killed two women at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Gaza. In a post on X, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described Israel’s months-long campaign against the civilian population in Gaza as “unacceptable,” stressing that no military justification could excuse such actions. The criticism was echoed by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who called the strike a “serious act” against a Christian place of worship and urged an immediate halt to the violence.

Italian Leaders Decry Targeting Of Religious Sites

Meloni emphasized that the attacks on civilian sites—particularly places of worship—undermine any legitimate military objective and called for urgent efforts to restore peace in the region. “No military action can justify Israel’s actions,” she wrote.

Foreign Minister Tajani also expressed alarm, noting, “It is time to stop and find peace.” He framed the attack not only as a humanitarian concern but also as a blow to religious coexistence and diplomatic norms.

The Holy Family Church, the only Catholic church in Gaza, has long served as a sanctuary for Christian families during times of war. Its targeting has drawn international criticism and increased diplomatic pressure on Israel.

International Outcry Over Civilian Casualties Mounts

The incident adds to a growing chorus of global voices denouncing the humanitarian cost of Israel’s ongoing campaign in Gaza. Civilian casualties, including in protected facilities like hospitals and religious institutions, have sparked protests and diplomatic rebukes across Europe and the Middle East.

As the war drags on, calls for accountability and restraint are intensifying. Italy’s condemnation is among the strongest from a European government, signaling growing unease even among traditional Western allies of Israel.
