Eyewitnesses reported that the Israeli warships approached fishing vessels near Gaza City and fired intensively before surrounding and detaining the occupants. Video footage confirmed the aggressive maneuver, which occurred despite the fishermen operating in shallow waters and attempting to procure food for their families.
One witness stated, “The navy boats came close and fired to terrorize them before arresting several of the fishermen.” The confrontation reflects the growing desperation in Gaza, where even short ventures to sea are fraught with danger due to Israel’s naval restrictions.
Since March 2, 2025, Israel has closed all border crossings with Gaza and barred entry of food and medical aid. As a result, many Palestinians have turned to the sea in search of basic survival, despite knowing the risks.
Severe Shortages Drive Risky Fishing Attempts
The escalation follows an official warning by the Israeli military, reiterating that strict restrictions are in place along the maritime zone off Gaza and that any violations will be “dealt with.” Military spokesperson Avichay Adraee stated that entering the sea is currently prohibited and violators would face immediate action.
In recent weeks, Gaza has seen a significant rise in deaths linked to hunger and lack of medical care. According to the Gaza Government Media Office, at least 69 children have died from malnutrition since October 2023. The total number of deaths due to hunger and lack of medicine has reportedly reached 620.
Despite the warnings, many fishermen continue to enter the sea—some venturing only a few meters—in a last resort to feed their families. For months, Gaza’s beaches have served as the only relief from the heat and hunger plaguing the population amid a near-total collapse of essential services.
