Israel has directed its military to maintain air superiority over Iran in the wake of a US-brokered ceasefire, with Defence Minister Israel Katz instructing the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to prepare a comprehensive “enforcement plan.”

“The IDF’s mission now is to ensure Iran cannot pose a threat to Israel again,” Katz stated Thursday evening, echoing Israel’s ongoing strategy in Lebanon where airstrikes have continued despite formal truces.

The ceasefire, declared on June 24 by US President Donald Trump, followed 12 days of conflict. During the war, Israel’s air force quickly dismantled Iran’s limited air defenses, enabling wide-ranging strikes, including on fortified underground nuclear facilities.

Strategic Posture Continues

Katz emphasised that Israel’s air force—considered the most advanced in the region—must preserve its operational edge and ability to enforce restrictions imposed on Iran under the ceasefire terms. “The State of Israel is determined to lead an active defence policy against Iran,” he said.

Despite the truce, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council declared it would retaliate against any future Israeli attacks, warning it has “its finger on the trigger.” Tehran had previously fired missiles at Israel in response to high-profile assassinations, including of Iranian personnel in Syria and inside Tehran.

Nuclear Tensions and Diplomatic Signals

Tensions remain high following Iran’s decision to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), blocking immediate inspection access to damaged nuclear facilities. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

According to Axios, US Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff may soon meet Iranian officials in Europe for further discussions.
