Israel expands occupation in the West Bank

Israel has authorized the establishment of 22 new Jewish settlements across the occupied West Bank, formalizing outposts previously considered illegal and drawing strong international criticism over its impact on prospects for Palestinian statehood.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz declared Thursday that the decision “strengthens our hold on Judea and Samaria,” using the biblical term for the West Bank.“It anchors our historical right in the Land of Israel and constitutes a crushing response to Palestinian terrorism,” he said.

Katz added that legalizing the outposts was also a strategic move to block the formation of a Palestinian state, which he claimed would endanger Israeli security.

International Law and Political Fallout

The move violates international consensus, with most of the world viewing West Bank settlements as illegal and a major obstacle to peace. The newly authorized settlements include hilltop outposts that had previously operated without state approval, alongside fully built communities with schools, factories, and parks.

The West Bank is home to about 3 million Palestinians living under Israeli military control, while approximately 500,000 Israeli settlers live in over 100 recognized and unrecognized settlements.
