The Pentagon has claimed the U.S.-Iran ceasefire is the result of overwhelming U.S. military pressure, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth asserting that Tehran was forced to the negotiating table after sustained strikes and strategic threats.
Speaking at a Pentagon briefing Wednesday, Hegseth described the campaign as a decisive “capital-V military victory,” stating that “Iran begged for this ceasefire.”
He added that “Iran has been a threat to the US and the free world for 47 years… no longer,” crediting U.S. President Donald Trump for reshaping the strategic balance through force and deterrence.
Hegseth said Operation Epic Fury, alongside earlier actions such as Operation Midnight Hammer, demonstrated U.S. ability to strike critical infrastructure, including targets linked to Iran’s energy exports and military production.
“We had some military targets on Kharg, which was a signal,” he said, adding that Iran’s “ability to produce and generate power… was in our hands.”
He emphasized that U.S. forces can monitor Iranian movements “24/7 overhead,” making repositioning forces more vulnerable.
The Pentagon outlined strict conditions on Iran’s nuclear program, with Hegseth stating, “They know this agreement means they will never, ever possess a nuclear weapon.”
He warned that any prohibited nuclear material would be removed, adding: “They will either give it to us… or we’ll get it. We’ll take it.”
He also reiterated that facilities remain under constant surveillance and that military options remain available if compliance fails.
Hegseth underscored that U.S. forces would remain engaged in the region, saying, “We’ll be hanging around. We’re not going anywhere,” and warning Iran against continued drone or missile launches.
He also acknowledged coordination with regional partners, including the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, noting their role in defending shared assets during the conflict.
While emphasizing military dominance, Hegseth said Trump “had the power to cripple Iran’s entire economy in minutes” but “chose mercy” by agreeing to a ceasefire.
He also asserted that Iran’s leadership was “humiliated and demoralized,” while maintaining that U.S. forces remain ready to act if terms are violated.
