The Israeli military is preparing to attack the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla, which left European waters this week aiming to challenge the blockade on the enclave.
The vessel Madleen, organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was last spotted near the coast of Greece and is expected to approach Gaza’s maritime perimeter in the coming days. The mission’s stated goal is to “break the siege on Gaza,” drawing attention to the humanitarian crisis in the coastal enclave.
Drone images from June 1 showed the vessel anchored off Catania, Italy, ahead of its eastward journey. Activists from multiple countries are believed to be on board.
IDF Prepares to Intercept the Flotilla
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed it is closely monitoring the flotilla and has plans in place to seize the vessel before it reaches Gaza’s waters. According to Israeli officials cited in Walla, the IDF intends to detain and deport the protestors if they attempt to breach the blockade.
“The IDF is prepared for the arrival of the protest flotilla,” the statement said. “It will take control of the vessel and deport protestors if necessary.”
