Armed forces of the M23/AFC coalition have strengthened their positions in the Kibati area of Walikale territory, North Kivu, with several trucks carrying fighters and munitions arriving Thursday evening, according to local and security sources.
Though the aim of the new deployment remains unclear, regional analysts suggest the group could be preparing for a new offensive. Community leaders have raised alarms over potential clashes, citing the proximity of government troops.
Despite ongoing peace talks between M23/AFC representatives and the Congolese government in Doha, Qatar, ceasefire violations continue. Armed confrontations have been reported across North and South Kivu in recent days.
Last week, leaders in neighbouring Masisi warned of similar troop build-ups in Kasopo, near the border with Walikale.
The United Nations has also noted the group's recent territorial gains in South Kivu, raising concerns over the stability of the ceasefire. The M23/AFC is widely believed to receive backing from Rwanda, a claim Kigali denies.
Community leaders in Walikale are calling on the Congolese army to remain alert as the threat of renewed fighting looms.
