US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani, Mazlum Abdi, and İlham Ahmed convened during the Munich Security Conference 2026, in what observers described as a significant diplomatic moment.
The annual gathering, which brings together leading transatlantic foreign policy and security figures, hosted the high-profile meeting amid renewed discussions over Syria’s political and security future.
Unity and Integration on the Agenda
According to a statement from Syria’s Foreign Ministry, the talks underscored Syria’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Participants also reviewed key domestic and regional developments.
The US delegation reaffirmed its support for the Syrian government’s recently signed integration agreement with the YPG, as well as Damascus’ efforts to combat ISIS (Daesh). Ways to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation across various sectors were also discussed.
“We Came Together to Solve Problems”
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mazlum Abdi said the discussions were generally positive.
“We discussed integration issues. We talked about the situation in Syria and the country’s future,” he stated, noting that while a ceasefire is in place, certain problems remain. “We came together to address those problems,” he added.
“A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words”
US Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack shared a photo from the meeting on social media, writing “A picture is worth a thousand words – a new beginning.”
The message fueled speculation that the encounter could mark the start of a new diplomatic phase in efforts to stabilize Syria and reshape political arrangements in the country.
Strategic Significance
The meeting’s importance lies not only in its symbolism but also in its potential implications. Bringing together US officials, representatives of the Syrian government and YPG at the same table signals a possible recalibration in diplomatic engagement.
Whether the Munich encounter translates into concrete political progress will depend on developments in the coming months.
