Lebanese media reported that armed Hezbollah elements were seen patrolling the streets of Dahiyeh, the group’s traditional stronghold in southern Beirut. Slogans and social media posts by supporters emphasized opposition to disarming what they describe as the “resistance’s weapons.” The protest, held on the eve of the cabinet session, reflected a broader mobilization effort by Hezbollah to demonstrate strength and deter political pressure.

The Lebanese government, under Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, is expected to debate a provision that seeks to centralize all military power within the Lebanese Armed Forces. According to cabinet leaks cited by Sky News Arabia, the proposal would effectively end Hezbollah’s control over its arsenal, both light and heavy, outside the national military structure. Some analysts view the move as a potential turning point in Lebanon’s years-long political deadlock over the group’s armed role.

Political Tensions Mount As Hezbollah Rejects Pressure

Justice Minister Adel Nassar warned on Sunday that Hezbollah should not drag Lebanon into confrontation by refusing to comply with state authority. Behind closed doors, efforts appear to be underway to seek a face-saving compromise. Sources reported a meeting between President Joseph Aoun and senior Hezbollah MP Mohammad Raad described as a “frank exchange,” indicating that sensitive negotiations may be unfolding.

Lebanon remains under a ceasefire with Israel following over a year of escalating cross-border hostilities that peaked in September. While active combat has subsided, Israeli airstrikes continue to target alleged Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon. Tel Aviv maintains that it will not allow Hezbollah to rebuild its military capabilities after sustaining significant losses during the conflict.
