U.S. President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino delivered a series of unusual declarations during a joint reception at Trump Tower in Manhattan, alternating between eccentric tactical critiques and sweeping claims about global unity.

The event, held ahead of Sunday’s final between Argentina and Spain, positioned the tournament as a massive commercial triumph while highlighting bizarre rhetorical exchanges between the two men.

FIFA Happiness Claims Mocked

The FIFA president drew attention by declaring that the global soccer governing body had become the "official happiness provider to humanity" during the New York reception.

The statement prompted an immediate onstage joke from the US president.

"Unless your team loses," Trump shouted to the audience, following the assertion by Infantino.

The remark followed the U.S. national team's own exit from the tournament after a 4-1 defeat against Belgium.

Infantino was effusive in his praise for the US president, credits him directly for the tournament's operational execution.

"You don’t need people to compliment you, Mr. President, but this World Cup would not have been such an incredible success without you," Infantino stated, adding that "the American dream, Mr. President, came to reality. We united the world."

Trump Critiques Tuchel Tactics

Trump pivoted the discussion toward tactical decisions made during the tournament, specifically targeting England coach Thomas Tuchel’s performance in the semi-final loss to Argentina.

The U.S president questioned the utilization of England captain Harry Kane, whom Trump noted he had played golf with in Florida 18 months prior.

"They perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player. What do I know about soccer?" Trump said.

"They took the lead and they took their best player and they put him on defense. We got to be a little offensive, right? What do I know about coaching?"

Tuchel has faced heavy domestic criticism for substituting two forwards to secure a defensive posture during the final half-hour against Argentina, allowing Lionel Messi space to orchestrate two goals.

Tuchel defended his choices on Friday, stating, "No I don't regret my decision. I thought we had become too passive. I was trying to help the team."

Record Numbers Amid Friction

The tournament is set to achieve a record total attendance of approximately 6.7 million viewers across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, overcoming early concerns regarding ticket pricing and immigration hurdles.

Despite the commercial success and full stadiums across 102 matches, the event has generated significant geopolitical friction.

The Iranian squad faced severe travel restrictions while their country was at war with the US, leading to a group-stage exit.

Furthermore, Infantino faced international criticism after lifting a red-card suspension for U.S. player Folarin Balogun following what Trump described as "making a recommendation."

Separately, the British government has demanded a FIFA investigation after Argentine players displayed a banner claiming sovereignty over the Falkland Islands following their victory over England.

France and England will contest the third-place match in Miami Gardens on Saturday before the final in East Rutherford on Sunday.
