Gunmen attacked Bagna and Erena villages in Niger State’s Shiroro district on Tuesday, killing at least 20 people and abducting an unknown number, according to residents. Police confirmed casualties among security personnel, including tow community guards and a driver.
Residents said the attackers operated for several hours, destroying homes and forcing villagers to flee to Gwada Zumba and Galadima Kogo, highlighting the scale and duration of the assault.
Security sources said forces engaged the attackers, with troops, Department of State Services (DSS) operatives, and local volunteers “neutralizing several bandits” during a foiled phase of the attack.
However, local accounts indicate that the scale of the raid exceeded defensive capacity, with attackers able to maintain control of the area for hours before leaving the area.
Similar reported incidents show broader escalation in violence nationwide. In recent weeks, 150 people were abducted in Zamfara, 31 rescued in Kaduna, and 17 killed in Benue - only few recent examples of such attacks - illustrating simultaneous crises across multiple regions in the country. Criminal gangs and militant groups repeatedly exploit weak state presence in rural areas.
Armed groups typically operate from forests and mountainous areas, targeting villages for ransom, mining control, and extortion, making containment difficult.
Data from 2023 to 2025 shows more than 2 attacks per day, resulting in 6,107 deaths. Abductions remain widespread, with 4,243 cases in 2023, 1,461 in early 2024, and 857 in early 2025.
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has proposed allowing the country’s 36 states to establish their own police forces, aiming to address persistent security gaps.
