Greenland’s Pro-Independence Naleraq Excluded from Coalition Over Strategy Clash

Naleraq leader Pele Broberg has suggested pursuing a “free association” model similar to Micronesia or Palau, signaling readiness for direct military and financial ties with Washington. This proposal has sparked debate amid Trump’s renewed interest in acquiring Greenland.

Demokraatit leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen has called for a “broad coalition” to present a unified front against external pressure. However, “broad” appears to exclude Naleraq’s disruptive stance, focusing instead on stability and gradual transition.

Election Results Shape New Coalition

In the March 2025 general election, Demokraatit won 10 of 31 seats (29.9%), emerging as the leading party. Naleraq came second with 8 seats (24.5%) but was excluded from coalition talks due to its insistence on rapid independence. Demokraatit is building a coalition with Inuit Ataqatigiit (7 seats) and Siumut (4 seats), forming a 21-seat majority.

Diverging Strategies on Independence

While all major parties support eventual independence, their strategies differ:
