Germany has pledged €5 billion in new military aid to Ukraine, the Defense Ministry in Berlin confirmed on Wednesday, signaling a renewed commitment to Kyiv as the war with Russia intensifies and American assistance remains uncertain.
The aid package includes a mix of heavy weaponry, air defense systems, ammunition, and logistical support. The announcement underscores Germany’s growing leadership role in European defense and its efforts to fill gaps left by wavering U.S. backing.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said the decision "reflects the seriousness of the situation and Germany’s responsibility to Ukraine and to European security."
Critical Timing as Russian Offensive Builds
The pledge comes as Ukraine braces for a major summer offensive by Russian forces in the Donetsk region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned of the need for urgent support to counter Russia’s battlefield gains and sustain defense lines across the eastern front.
The German package is expected to include additional IRIS-T air defense systems and ammunition critical to protecting Ukrainian cities from intensified Russian missile and drone attacks.
With U.S. aid packages stalled in Congress and President Trump focused on nuclear negotiations with Russia and Iran, Germany and other European allies are assuming a larger share of Ukraine’s military burden.
Berlin has previously contributed over €17 billion in assistance since the start of the war, making it the second-largest donor after Washington.
