Germany has approved sweeping legislation designed to dismantle postwar restrictions on its intelligence apparatus.

The draft law marks a profound shift in Berlin’s security posture following a series of recent domestic attacks.

Internal and external intelligence agencies will acquire expansive new capabilities under the mandate.

“We are turning our intelligence services into genuine secret services,” he stated.

Expanding Cyber and Operational Mandates

Additional measures permit intelligence officers to intercept digital financial transfers directed at low-level foreign operatives. The legislation also enables the BND to actively sabotage weapons production through altered blueprints.

BND Director Martin Jäger emphasized the strategic necessity of deterrence against hostile state actors like Russia and China.

Germany must demonstrate to adversaries “that we’re in a position to do similar things so the other side also feels the pain,” he remarked.

Personnel deployed overseas will face fewer bureaucratic hurdles regarding defensive firearms, though lethal offensive force remains strictly prohibited.
