French officials say China's embassies have been actively lobbying countries that have purchased or are considering purchasing Rafale jets, notably Indonesia, to reconsider in favour of Chinese-made alternatives. The allegations stem from a French investigation into the aftermath of the May conflict between India and Pakistan, during which Pakistan claimed to have downed five Indian planes, including three Rafales.
India later confirmed aircraft losses but did not specify the number. French Air Force Chief General Jerome Bellanger reported that evidence points to the downing of one Rafale, one Sukhoi, and one Mirage 2000.
Disinformation Campaign Alleged
French authorities say China has orchestrated a coordinated online and diplomatic campaign to discredit Rafale performance. The effort allegedly included manipulated images, AI-generated visuals, and social media bots that spread narratives of Chinese air superiority. Over 1,000 fake accounts were reportedly created to push this narrative during and after the India-Pakistan air combat episode.
While the French intelligence services have not established a direct link to the Chinese government, they assert that Chinese embassy defence attachés repeated the same negative messaging in meetings with foreign officials.
Dassault And Paris Push Back
The French Ministry of Armed Forces stated the Rafale was targeted due to its international presence and capabilities. Dassault Aviation, the jet’s manufacturer, has sold 533 Rafales globally, including large deals with India, Egypt, Qatar, and the UAE. Indonesia has ordered 42 jets and is reportedly under pressure to reconsider.
Beijing has dismissed the French claims as “pure groundless rumours and slander,” insisting it maintains a “prudent and responsible” approach to military exports.
