Valtonen’s remarks come as Finland deepens its integration into NATO and aligns its foreign policy priorities more closely with those of the U.S. She stated that Russia’s continued aggression in Ukraine requires a “firm and unified” response, with economic measures being a central pillar of deterrence.

During her meetings with U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Valtonen reportedly discussed broader defense and intelligence cooperation. The talks included Finland’s contributions to NATO’s eastern flank and efforts to strengthen resilience against hybrid threats.

Valtonen also praised Washington’s leadership role in supporting Ukraine and reaffirmed Finland’s commitment to sustaining pressure on the Kremlin through multilateral sanctions.

Finland’s Posture After NATO Accession

Since joining NATO in 2023, Finland has shifted to a more assertive regional security role. Its border with Russia, now the longest of any NATO member, places it at the frontline of Europe’s deterrence strategy.

The call for new sanctions reflects Helsinki’s assessment that military and economic pressure must go hand in hand. Valtonen’s Washington visit is part of a wider diplomatic campaign to ensure that allies remain committed to countering Russian influence in both Eastern Europe and the Arctic.
