Finland’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russia’s ambassador on Monday following a suspected breach of its airspace by two Russian military aircraft. The violation reportedly took place on May 23 over the Gulf of Finland, according to a government statement shared on X (formerly Twitter).

The Finnish Border Guard has launched an investigation, but officials have not disclosed flight paths or aircraft types involved in the intrusion.

This marks the latest in a series of Russian military provocations. Earlier airspace breaches occurred in February 2025 and June 2024, while a Russian naval vessel entered Finnish waters last year. Each incident has raised alarm in Helsinki, particularly since Finland joined NATO in April 2023 in direct response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Finland’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has dramatically shifted regional dynamics. Once militarily non-aligned, the Nordic country now shares NATO’s longest direct border with Russia. This has drawn the ire of Moscow and increased scrutiny of its military movements near Finnish territory.

While Finland has refrained from escalating the situation militarily, officials continue to stress vigilance and NATO solidarity amid rising security tensions in the Baltic region.
