Anthropic said on Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models.
The company had disabled access to both models in mid-June to comply with a directive citing “national security authorities.”
The directive required suspending access for “any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees.”
Fable 5 Returns, Mythos 5 Access Widens
Fable 5 will again be available globally on the Claude platform, and Claude Code starting Wednesday.
Anthropic said it also restored Mythos 5 access for some U.S. organizations following government approval this week, and will keep expanding access through its Glasswing cybersecurity program.
Fable 5 will also return to Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry.
Chinese Rivals Gained Ground During Standoff
The controls coincided with a rapid rise in Chinese open-source models seen as increasingly competitive on cost and capability, prompting tech executives and investors to warn that the freeze was handing Beijing's developers valuable time.
Anthropic received the export directive on June 12 and rushed to Washington to negotiate, sharing minimal public updates in the weeks since.
Anthropic Is No More A National Security Threat: Trump
President Trump said this week, when asked whether he viewed Anthropic and CEO Dario Amodei as a national security threat:
“Well, not now, but a week ago maybe.”
The remark came a week after the government had ordered Anthropic to block foreign nationals from its advanced models, a move Anthropic said it had to comply with immediately and described as a “misunderstanding.”
