The foreign ministers of Germany, France, and Britain will hold urgent nuclear talks with Iran’s top diplomat in Geneva on Friday, as part of a coordinated effort with the United States to contain a spiraling conflict in the Middle East.

Crisis Diplomacy Amid Escalation

According to a German diplomatic source, the meeting will take place at Germany’s permanent mission in Geneva and will be preceded by a preparatory session with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. The discussions come as Israel continues military operations against Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure, while Tehran has launched waves of retaliatory missile attacks.

The goal of the talks is to persuade Iran to formally guarantee that its nuclear program will remain strictly for civilian purposes. A follow-up expert-level dialogue is expected to deepen the discussions.

International Pressure on Iran

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Wednesday urged Iran to de-escalate and return to diplomacy. “It’s never too late to come to the negotiating table,” he said. Meanwhile, Chancellor Friedrich Merz voiced support for Israel’s military campaign, angering Tehran by warning that further escalation by Iran could invite “even greater destruction.”

U.S. Watches Closely, Holds Back—for Now

Although the United States will not directly participate in Friday’s meeting, the European effort is said to be coordinated closely with Washington. President Donald Trump has so far withheld committing U.S. military support to Israel, creating uncertainty about how far the conflict might expand.

Analysts believe the Geneva meeting could become a last-ditch diplomatic attempt to halt full-scale war.
