Burundi, which has maintained a significant contingent in Somalia for years, is preparing to scale down its presence under the AU transition plan. Egypt’s troops will take over these responsibilities, ensuring there is no security vacuum in critical areas. Somali authorities welcomed the move, noting that the arrival of Egyptian forces would strengthen local operations against insurgents and provide continuity as AUSSOM adapts to shifting regional dynamics.

AU Endorsement And Regional Role

The African Union Peace and Security Council approved Egypt’s participation, stressing that Cairo’s growing involvement illustrates its commitment to African stability. Somali officials highlighted the importance of AU and international partners in building up local security institutions, pointing to Egypt’s readiness as a sign of increased regional responsibility. The deployment will also involve trained units that recently completed preparations in Egypt, enhancing AUSSOM’s operational capacity.

GERD Dispute And Strategic Calculations

The timing of Egypt’s entry into Somalia coincides with its high-stakes dispute with Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). For Cairo, joining AUSSOM serves both to project influence in the Horn of Africa and to secure broader regional partnerships while defending its water interests along the Nile. Analysts note that the deployment reflects Egypt’s dual strategy: addressing security challenges in the Horn while navigating the pressures of Nile negotiations and shifting alliances.
