Denmark Deploys Conscripts to Greenland as US Tensions Rise

Denmark has deployed conscripts to Greenland for the first time in recent history, extending its military footprint on the Arctic island as tensions with the U.S. sharpen over its future.

The deployment places young Danish soldiers in one of the kingdom's most strategically sensitive regions after U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly called for Washington to acquire Greenland.

Denmark and Greenland have rejected those demands.

A New Role for Conscripts

The soldiers belong to the first intake trained under Denmark's extended conscription program, which is intended to prepare personnel for operations in demanding environments including the Arctic.

Their arrival marks a shift in how Copenhagen is using its conscript force as it seeks to strengthen its presence in Greenland.

"It shows presence that we're here and not just thinking of our own skin. And also thinking of the people in Greenland," David, a 19-year-old conscript, told Reuters.

The group is taking part in Arctic Endurance, a Danish military exercise focused on combat and survival in extreme cold.

Training north of the Arctic Circle has put the conscripts in exposed terrain dominated by bare rock and open ground.

U.S. Pressure Raises the Stakes

Trump has justified his push to acquire the semi-autonomous Danish territory on national security grounds while accusing Copenhagen of failing to invest sufficiently in Arctic defense.

Denmark has since pledged billions of dollars to reinforce its defenses in the region after its defense minister acknowledged years of underinvestment.

The conscript deployment is therefore unfolding against a wider political dispute over Greenland, even as Danish commanders frame the mission primarily as military training.

"Of course, we are a part of a bigger picture of the strategic communication about Greenland, but our role here is just to continue the training of the conscripts, the soldiers, and get more experience with the training in the Arctic terrain and climate," company commander Captain Laura Jepsen said.

NATO Expands Arctic Presence

Arctic Endurance also forms part of Arctic Sentry, a NATO mission launched this year to strengthen the alliance's presence in the region and reduce internal tensions following Trump's remarks on Greenland.

The increased activity comes as competition in the Arctic broadens beyond Denmark and the U.S.

Russia, which has the region's largest military footprint, has described NATO's expanding activity as a direct security threat and warned that it raises the risk of confrontation.

China has also increased its activity in the mineral-rich Arctic, largely through cooperation with Moscow.

For Copenhagen, the deployment of conscripts adds another layer to its effort to demonstrate a sustained presence in Greenland.

"I think it sends a message that Denmark is reinforcing itself for the future," said Anton, a 22-year-old conscript.
