Defense Officials Deny Netanyahu's Claim of an Attack Ahead of Elections
Defense officials told Haaretz that no urgent intelligence had changed Israel’s threat assessment, despite Netanyahu’s warning of an attack before the October 27 vote. Opposition leaders demanded he brief Yair Lapid.

Israeli defense officials have contradicted the basis of Benjamin Netanyahu’s warning of an attack ahead of the October 27 election, telling Haaretz that no urgent intelligence had prompted a change in their security assessment.
The officials said regional tensions were expected to persist through the vote.
Their account offered no indication of a newly identified threat requiring a revised assessment.
Netanyahu nevertheless raised the alarm during a visit to Tel Nof Airbase on Tuesday, saying there were signs that “our enemies will try to attack us.”
He threatened to strike them “at any location and at any time.”
He subsequently convened senior defense officials for an urgent meeting in Jerusalem.
Opposition Demands Intelligence
Leaders of parties opposing Netanyahu demanded that he disclose any intelligence supporting his warning to opposition leader Yair Lapid.
A briefing between the two was scheduled for late Wednesday.
The dispute comes as Netanyahu faces renewed scrutiny over warnings he allegedly received before the October 7 attacks.
Recent reports have described alerts from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Palestinian sources.
Netanyahu unsuccessfully sought to persuade UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed during a Sunday visit to distance himself from reporting about an earlier warning, according to Haaretz.
The newspaper’s analysis argued that Netanyahu was seeking to turn mounting security anxiety into an electoral advantage.
It also raised the possibility that a major escalation could provide grounds for seeking an election delay.
Only weeks earlier, Netanyahu had claimed Iran was holding back from attacking Israel, “and it knows why.”
Pressure for West Bank Operations
Defense Minister Israel Katz has separately summoned senior defense officials to discuss a more aggressive operation in another West Bank refugee camp.
Haaretz reported that the number of Israelis injured in Palestinian attacks in the West Bank had fallen significantly in 2026.
It also described continued coordination between Israeli and Palestinian security forces, including Palestinian assistance in arresting suspects, particularly Hamas operatives.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has called for war in the West Bank. The newspaper linked his position to efforts to dismantle the Palestinian Authority and potentially annex the territory.
Settler Attack Exposes Enforcement Failure
The push for further military action coincides with another episode of settler violence in Jalud, south of Nablus.
Israeli forces were attempting to implement a court order allowing a displaced Palestinian family to return home when approximately 150 settlers surrounded the houses and attacked Palestinians, soldiers and police.
The forces evacuated the villagers after their safety deteriorated. Three rioters were arrested.
Netanyahu, Katz and President Isaac Herzog condemned the incident.
Haaretz criticized their statements for emphasizing interference with security operations rather than the violence against Palestinians.
