Colombian Cartels Infiltrate Ukraine War to Steal Drone Warfare Secrets

Colombian drug cartels and illegal armed factions are deploying operatives to the Ukrainian battlefield to master advanced drone tactics before turning those weapons against the state.

Over the past year, Bogota has witnessed a surge in sophisticated drone strikes mimicking eastern European combat zones.

Armed groups seek to erode the Colombian military's long-standing aerial supremacy over dense jungle territories, according to the Financial Times.

Battlefield Technology Transfer

Criminal syndicates are specifically targeting expertise in first-person view (FPV) attack drones.

A primary operational goal is learning to bypass electronic jamming systems, optimize explosive payloads, and encrypt communications between pilots and unmanned aerial vehicles.

“The recruitment schemes are very complex, but what worries me most is the level of specialization they’re acquiring,” an anonymous Colombian aid worker stationed in Ukraine stated. “Former paramilitaries, former guerrillas and former soldiers are fighting and learning together here how to operate drones.”

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has identified this infiltration risk. Taras Palianytsia, an officer with the Foreign Recruiting Center, confirmed that commanders weed out and expel individuals linked to organized crime when they are discovered.

Contested Airspace

The transfer of this military knowledge has already altered Bogota's domestic security landscape. The defense ministry recorded 264 hostile drone attacks between 2024 and 2025.

These strikes, often utilizing commercial drones rigged with explosives, have inflicted steady casualties on state security forces.

Recent incidents include a December strike on a military base that killed seven, and an April assault targeting a radar installation that left three soldiers dead near the Ecuadorean border.

“The drone industry has exploded, and criminals have adapted the technology for attacks, which is a major challenge to battlefield aerial supremacy,” outgoing Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez told the FT.

Evolving Tactical Threats

Bogota successfully neutralized 96 percent of incoming drone threats last year through electronic jamming and kinetic destruction.

However, returning cartel operatives are actively developing countermeasures learned in Ukraine to outwit these defenses.

Intelligence indicates Colombian factions are attempting to acquire drones controlled via ultra-thin fiber-optic cables.

This technology, pioneered in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and later used by militant groups like Hezbollah, renders traditional radio-frequency jammers useless.

In response, the Colombian government announced a $1.6 billion anti-drone initiative in January, comprising fixed and mobile detection grids.

Authorities have also imposed stringent import restrictions on all civilian and commercial drone technology.

The Mercenary Pipeline

Colombia’s protracted internal conflict has generated a vast pool of battle-hardened veterans. Drawn by lucrative salaries that dwarf domestic military pensions, many have fought in Yemen, South Sudan, and Ukraine.

At least 500 Colombians have died in Ukraine over the past four years.

The mercenary pipeline drew sharp criticism from President Gustavo Petro, who recently raised military salaries and ratified a 1989 UN convention to stem the exodus of fighters.

The evolving aerial security crisis now falls to incoming President Abelardo de la Espriella, a hardline conservative taking office on Friday.

He inherits a military rapidly losing its historic monopoly on the airspace above rebel-held territories to cartel-operated drone swarms.
