Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger has accused the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and corporate entities of systematically editing the online encyclopedia to advance state and institutional interests.

Sanger claims the platform's strict anonymity rules have facilitated an unchecked environment for intelligence operatives and global public relations firms to shape public narratives.

The former editor asserts the site now functions as an instrument for established geopolitical and financial powers.

The exploitation of Wikipedia extends beyond rogue editors to organized state-level interventions.

"The CIA has already edited Wikipedia," Sanger told Berliner Zeitung, emphasizing that the exact scale of intelligence manipulation remains obscured by the platform's opaque user structure.

Specialized crisis management firms have simultaneously weaponized the digital platform. Wiki-PR generated millions of dollars by altering encyclopedia entries on behalf of corporate clients.

Dissident perspectives are routinely purged by anonymous administrators holding expansive technical privileges.

"I believe Wikipedia is already compromised," Sanger stated. He argued that entities willing to finance the manipulation of articles have successfully influenced the platform for years.

Former Wikimedia Foundation executive Katherine Maher acknowledged in 2021 that the organization held closed-door discussions with governments and other digital platforms.

Sanger views these interactions as evidence of deepening integration between the encyclopedia and global power structures.

Sanger, who exited the project in 2002, was indefinitely suspended from the English-language platform in June 2026.
