China has dramatically enhanced its ability to launch a sudden attack on Taiwan, according to senior U.S. and Taiwanese military officials. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has reached a stage where its air and missile forces, along with amphibious and air assault units, can transition from peacetime drills to full-scale invasion operations within hours.

“The PLA air force and missile units can switch to war operations at any time,” said a senior Taiwanese military official. Admiral Samuel Paparo, head of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, echoed these concerns, stating in February that PLA preparations now blur the line between training and real assault.

Chinese forces conduct non-stop amphibious exercises near embarkation ports and operate army aviation units that are ready to airdrop troops into Taiwan. The PLA Navy has maintained a constant rotational presence in chokepoints like the Miyako Strait and Bashi Channel, critical gateways into the Pacific. Around a dozen Chinese warships and coast guard vessels now surround Taiwan on a near-constant basis.

This growing maritime posture enables a blockade “in a matter of hours,” U.S. defense officials say. With Type 075 amphibious assault ships and destroyers capable of deploying special forces by helicopter, Taiwan’s military warns that an air assault could come with minimal warning.

Rocket Systems and Air Superiority

China’s PCH-191 multiple rocket launcher—deployed widely along the coast—can hit any target across Taiwan from Chinese territory. Cheaper, more mobile, and harder to detect than short-range missiles, these systems could neutralize Taiwan’s coastal defenses and airfields in a first wave of strikes.

PLA airpower has also expanded. Jets such as the J-10, J-11, J-16, and stealth-capable J-20 now have extended range and can reach Taiwan without refueling, supported by Y-20 tankers. China currently flies over 245 sorties into Taiwan’s air defense zone each month and crosses the Taiwan Strait median line more than 120 times monthly.
