President Donald Trump has confirmed that a new round of U.S.-China trade talks will take place in London on June 9, as both sides seek to ease tensions following months of escalating tariffs and market volatility.
Trump stated on Truth Social that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will meet with Chinese officials regarding the “Trade Deal.” The Chinese embassy in Washington has yet to comment.
This round follows an April tariff surge—described by Trump as “liberation day”—and a subsequent Geneva truce last month that saw mutual reductions in levies.
Despite easing tariffs, critical issues remain unresolved. Talks will focus on rare earth exports, semiconductors, and other high-tech trade disputes. These are key flashpoints in the broader U.S.-China rivalry and have deepened fears over the weaponization of supply chains.
The Trump-Xi call also included a pledge for reciprocal visits, though no dates were announced. The talks are seen as an attempt to restore predictability to a relationship repeatedly disrupted by tariffs and tech restrictions.
Markets responded positively: the S&P 500 closed 1% higher on Friday, signaling cautious optimism.
