Britain, Canada, and France have threatened to impose sanctions on Israel if it does not halt its ongoing military offensive in Gaza and lift restrictions on humanitarian aid. This move, announced on May 19, adds to the growing international pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who recently declared plans to take full control of the Gaza Strip.
A joint statement released by the British government condemned Israel's blockade, which has cut off vital medical, food, and fuel supplies to the densely populated region since March, calling it a potential violation of international humanitarian law. The leaders also opposed any expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, warning that they "will not hesitate to take further action, including targeted sanctions" if Israel continues its current course.
Netanyahu Defends Israel's Position
In response, Netanyahu accused the Western leaders of rewarding what he described as a "genocidal attack" against Israel, referencing the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led assault that killed around 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages being taken. He reiterated that Israel would defend itself "by just means until total victory is achieved" and outlined preconditions for ending the conflict, including the release of remaining hostages and the complete demilitarization of Gaza.
"We have always supported Israel's right to defend Israelis against terrorism. But this escalation is wholly disproportionate,"
Hamas Welcomes Western Support for Ceasefire
Hamas praised the joint statement from Britain, Canada, and France as a positive step toward restoring international law. The group, which governs Gaza, has faced severe air and ground attacks from Israel, resulting in over 53,000 deaths, according to Gaza health officials. Nearly the entire population of Gaza has been displaced by the ongoing conflict.
