Britain and the European Union have agreed to the most significant reset of their relationship since Brexit, with a focus on trade, defense, and economic cooperation. The deal, signed at a summit in London on May 19, 2025, includes the removal of key trade barriers and a €150 billion defense pact aimed at enhancing Europe’s military capabilities. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the reset would help “move on from the stale old political fights” of the Brexit era and provide practical benefits for British citizens.

Defense and Trade at the Core of the Deal

At the heart of the reset is a defense pact that will allow British companies like BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, and Babcock to participate in a €150 billion rearmament program, but further negotiations will be required for full access. The agreement also includes a 12-year deal granting reciprocal fishing rights, a politically sensitive issue that has drawn criticism from pro-Brexit figures like Nigel Farage and members of the UK fishing industry.

Easing Trade Frictions and Restoring Mobility

The agreement aims to reduce bureaucratic hurdles that have hampered small British exporters since Brexit. In exchange, Britain agreed to outline a limited youth mobility scheme and is considering rejoining the Erasmus+ student exchange program, which it left in 2020. The deal also includes faster e-gate access for UK travelers at EU airports, a long-sought concession for British citizens seeking smoother travel across Europe.

The reset comes amid broader geopolitical shifts, including U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff policies and the ongoing war in Ukraine, which have prompted European governments to strengthen defense ties. The UK has also recently secured trade deals with India and the U.S., reflecting a strategic push to diversify its economic partnerships post-Brexit.
