Benin Military Coup Attempt Reported Repelled

Gunfire erupted across Cotonou early Sunday as soldiers appeared on state TV announcing the dissolution of national institutions. The incident comes months before April’s presidential election and marks Benin’s most serious political rupture since the 1970s.

Soldiers Claim Power Before Being Dislodged

A group calling itself the Military Committee for Refoundation said it had suspended the constitution and closed all borders.

Loyalist forces retook the state broadcaster and a military camp, with Talon later declaring that all “pockets of resistance” were cleared. At least 14 soldiers were arrested.

Nigeria Assists, ECOWAS Orders Deployment

At Talon’s request, Nigeria deployed air force fighter jets and later ground troops to regain control of Benin’s airspace and secure key sites.

ECOWAS condemned the coup and ordered an immediate deployment of its standby force, including troops from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Ghana.

Gunfire And Explosions Rattle Cotonou

Witnesses reported shots beginning around 08:00, with explosions heard again in the evening near Talon’s residence.

Police sealed major intersections, and residents described rushing to close shops as soldiers moved through neighbourhoods. AP footage shows armoured vehicles patrolling the streets.

Mutineers Cite Northern Insecurity

The soldiers said deteriorating security in northern Benin and the neglect of “fallen brothers-in-arms” motivated their actions.

Benin has faced rising jihadist activity spilling over from Niger and Burkina Faso, including major attacks in January and April that killed dozens. Analysts said this pressure may have contributed to discontent within the ranks.

Political Stakes Ahead Of Elections

Benin recently adopted a new constitution extending presidential terms from five to seven years.

Talon is due to step down next April, with former finance minister Romuald Wadagni leading the ruling coalition’s ticket after opposition candidate Renaud Agbodjo was disqualified. The coup attempt adds volatility to an already contentious electoral cycle.
