Azerbaijani Gas to Flow to Syria via Kilis Pipeline Starting August 2
Azerbaijani natural gas deliveries to Syria will begin August 2 through Türkiye’s Kilis pipeline, Turkish media reports.
Natural gas from Azerbaijan will start flowing to Syria on August 2 via the Kilis pipeline, marking a significant milestone in post-war reconstruction efforts in Syria and Türkiye’s ambition to become a regional energy hub, Turkish media reported on Tuesday.
According to the reports, the pipeline project is the result of a recent agreement between Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR and Syrian authorities. Preparatory work has already been completed, setting the stage for the delivery of 1.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.
“The new energy pipeline, which is considered an important step in the reconstruction of Syria, is scheduled to be put into operation on August 1,” Turkish outlets quoted the agreement as stating.
Powering Syria’s Recovery
The gas will pass through Kilis, a Turkish city near the Syrian border, and be delivered to power plants in Aleppo and Homs—regions that have suffered extensive infrastructure damage during more than a decade of civil war.
Once operational, the gas-powered plants are expected to produce 1,200 to 1,300 megawatts of electricity, providing a much-needed boost to Syria’s devastated energy sector.
The deal also underscores Türkiye’s growing role in regional energy logistics, as it continues to position itself as a central transit corridor for gas supplies between East and West.
