Australia Urged to Boost Forward Defense Capabilities Against China
Australia should expand its ability to project military power beyond its borders to counter China's growing long-range strike capabilities, according to a report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI).
The report calls for a "forward defence in depth" strategy, aimed at detecting and countering potential threats before they reach Australian territory.
ASPI recommends strengthening surveillance, targeting systems, long-range strike capabilities and forward military deployments across the Indo-Pacific.
It also urges Canberra to deepen defense cooperation with the United States, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea to improve regional deterrence and operational coordination.
The report argues that China's expanding military reach is challenging Australia's traditional defense posture, making closer regional partnerships and greater forward military capabilities increasingly important.
The recommendations come amid growing concerns over China's military modernization and its expanding naval and missile capabilities in the Indo-Pacific.
