AUSSOM stated that the operation led to “substantial losses” for al-Shabab, including dozens of fighters killed and many others seriously injured. Responding to militant propaganda, the AU mission said its forces did not suffer the equipment losses alleged in videos circulating online. The campaign to retake Bariire is part of a broader strategy to restore government control over regions in southern Somalia, particularly those along the Shabelle River that remain under militant influence.
El Hadji Ibrahima Boly Diene, the AU Commission Chairperson’s Special Representative and AUSSOM head, emphasized that the goal is to ensure lasting peace by liberating more territories. He praised the determination of AU and Somali troops to expand their presence and protect civilians from extremist threats. Local residents described the fighting as some of the most intense in recent days, underscoring the town’s strategic significance.
Bariire Seen As Strategic Stronghold
Bariire, located in the agriculturally vital Lower Shabelle region, has long been contested due to its location near the river and its importance for both governance and food security. The town has changed hands multiple times in past years, and AU officials say its full recovery is key to weakening al-Shabab’s operational capacity in the region.
The latest offensive aligns with the African Union’s broader stabilization mission, which seeks to support Somali government institutions while neutralizing remaining militant strongholds. Officials have reiterated their commitment to operations that combine military action with local engagement to create sustainable peace in conflict-affected regions.
