Local residents described the fighting as some of the most intense in recent days, underscoring the town’s strategic significance.

Bariire Seen As Strategic Stronghold

Bariire, located in the agriculturally vital Lower Shabelle region, has long been contested due to its location near the river and its importance for both governance and food security. The town has changed hands multiple times in past years, and AU officials say its full recovery is key to weakening al-Shabab’s operational capacity in the region.

The latest offensive aligns with the African Union’s broader stabilization mission, which seeks to support Somali government institutions while neutralizing remaining militant strongholds.
