The armed attack occurred during the evening hours on the Brown University campus in Providence, Rhode Island. When police arrived at the scene, they found multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds, prompting extensive security measures across the campus. Following the attack, hundreds of police officers were deployed, and students and staff were instructed to remain in place for several hours.
Initial Statements From Authorities
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley announced at a press conference that at least two people had lost their lives and nine others had been injured in the attack. He stated that the injured were receiving hospital treatment and that some were in serious condition. Smiley emphasized that the incident caused significant anxiety throughout the city.
Suspect Released, Investigation Changes Course
Following the attack, authorities detained a suspicious individual at a hotel in the Coventry area of Rhode Island. Sources close to the investigation said the individual was a 24-year-old man from Wisconsin, though officials did not disclose his identity. After further evaluation, authorities determined there was no sufficient legal basis to keep the individual in custody and announced that he would be released.
This development was described as a major setback in the investigation. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said that some evidence initially believed to be linked to the attack later pointed in a different direction, stating, “There is still a killer out there.”
Security Measures on Campus and Latest Situation
Despite an increased police presence, authorities said they do not currently consider it necessary to reinstate the shelter-in-place order that had locked down the campus for hours following the attack. The lockdown was lifted early Sunday morning. No official information has yet been provided regarding a possible motive.
Authorities said security camera footage is being closely examined to identify the attacker and that the investigation is continuing on multiple fronts. Brown University administration also announced that psychological support services have been made available for students and families.
