Angola Protest Death Toll Rises To 22 Amid Crackdown
Angola’s Interior Minister Manuel Homem confirmed that 22 people have died during nationwide protests over fuel prices, with more than 1,120 arrested and nearly 200 injured.
According to Interior Minister Homem, 1,120 individuals have been arrested and at least 197 others injured since violence erupted in the capital on Monday. The protest began as a planned three-day strike by Luanda’s minibus taxi drivers but escalated rapidly into looting and destruction of public and private property. Government buildings, buses, bank branches, and retail outlets were among the reported targets.
Though Luanda saw relative calm restored by Tuesday, the wave of unrest reached Huambo, a key city in central Angola, where further disruptions were reported. Images from the Kalemba 2 district of Luanda showed residents looting shops and carrying stolen goods through the streets amid the chaos.
Fuel Costs And Austerity Drive Political Anger
The protests are the latest and most deadly expression of growing discontent with President João Lourenço’s economic reforms, particularly the slashing of fuel subsidies. Angola, Africa’s third-largest oil producer, has experienced surging living costs and inflation following IMF-endorsed austerity measures. The government has argued the subsidy cuts were necessary to rebalance the budget, but opposition figures and civil society groups say the burden has disproportionately affected low-income citizens.
Earlier in July, hundreds of university students in Luanda protested rising tuition and living expenses, reflecting broader economic grievances. With general elections set for 2027, the spike in protest fatalities has raised new concerns about political stability and state response to civil unrest in one of sub-Saharan Africa’s largest economies.
