Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev made bilateral unity the central message of a joint appearance with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Shusha on Sunday, Nov. 8.

“The main outcome of this visit is that the unity between Türkiye and Azerbaijan is eternal and unshakable,” Aliyev said, according to APA’s English translation of his remarks.

Erdoğan traveled to Karabakh at Aliyev’s invitation for Azerbaijan’s Victory Day. Anadolu Agency reported that Aliyev welcomed him at Fuzuli International Airport before the two leaders headed to Shusha.

Unity and Brotherhood

Aliyev warned that efforts to divide the two countries would fail.

“Our unity and brotherhood are unshakable. Those who seek to undermine them will never achieve their goals,” he said, according to APA.

He said neither side would allow anyone to come between them or damage their unity for personal interests. He did not identify a particular individual or country in the passage reported by the agency.

Aliyev pointed to the Shusha Declaration and the countries’ alliance, saying the declaration had formalized their historical and cultural ties. He cited common ethnic roots and shared history as foundations of the relationship.

He also described Erdoğan’s presence in Karabakh on Victory Day as a demonstration of unity, saying the two countries were stronger together and calling their partnership a factor in regional stability and security.

Erdoğan Echoes Unity Message

Erdoğan also warned against attempts to weaken bilateral ties.

“Those who seek to weaken the brotherhood between Azerbaijan and Türkiye will never achieve their ambitions, just as they failed yesterday, will fail today, and will fail tomorrow,” he said, according to an English translation accompanying video of the remarks shared by Clash Report.

The appearance followed Erdoğan’s announcement that he was considering a Nov. 8 visit. Azerbaijan’s presidency confirmed that the two leaders delivered their press statements in Shusha.

Video from the end of the joint press conference showed the two presidents receiving a standing ovation.
