60-Day Ceasefire Nears as Trump Mediates Hostage Deal

A 60-day ceasefire in Gaza is reportedly close, as negotiations led by Qatar and backed by the Trump administration make headway. The deal would include a phased release of Israeli hostages and the return of deceased captives’ remains, according to sources familiar with the talks.

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed his efforts on Sunday, stating, “We want to see if we can stop this whole situation as quickly as possible.” He added he was optimistic that “good news” would soon emerge.

According to terms under discussion, 10 Israeli hostages are to be released during the truce—five on the first day and five on the final day. Additionally, the bodies of 16 deceased hostages are expected to be returned over the ceasefire period.

The arrangement marks the most concrete step toward a pause in hostilities since the collapse of a temporary ceasefire earlier this year. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that 20 hostages remain alive and expressed conditional readiness: “If there is an opportunity for a temporary ceasefire to return hostages, we are prepared for it.”

As part of the negotiations, Hamas is demanding the release of all Gazan prisoners held in Israeli jails. While Israel has not publicly commented on this point, the demand underscores the complexity of securing a long-term solution.

The new ceasefire would follow earlier failed efforts and rising international pressure on both sides to facilitate humanitarian relief and prevent further civilian casualties.
