According to the PRCS, the attack began shortly after midnight when Israeli artillery hit the upper floors of the Khan Younis HQ. As staff attempted to evacuate and assess the damage, the second floor was shelled again, followed by a strike on the ground floor while workers were extinguishing the fire. The PRCS identified the deceased as Omar Isleem and said it was “heartbroken” over his death. Two other workers and one civilian assisting in the rescue were also injured.
The Israeli army responded by stating it was reviewing the claim and acknowledged the possibility that uninvolved individuals in the area may have been harmed during the strike.
The United Nations Human Rights Office expressed “deep shock and outrage” over the continuing deaths of emergency responders in Gaza, urging an independent investigation. The PRCS noted that since the war began, 51 staff and volunteers have been killed in Gaza, including 29 while performing humanitarian duties.
The strike comes amid broader warnings about Gaza’s humanitarian collapse. The Hamas-run health ministry reported 104 deaths in the past 24 hours, including 65 people killed while seeking aid. UN figures show at least 1,373 Palestinians have died since late May while attempting to access food, many near distribution points supported by international partners.
Meanwhile, aid deliveries remain limited. Though Israel has recently allowed some humanitarian access, UN agencies warn it is far from sufficient to address the deepening food and medical crisis. The Gaza health ministry reported six new deaths from malnutrition on Sunday, bringing the total to 175, including 93 children.
