The United Nations has strongly condemned Israel for what it described as deliberate attacks on Palestinians working to protect aid convoys in Gaza, warning that such strikes have intensified famine and humanitarian collapse in the besieged territory. In a statement, the UN Office for Human Rights said it documented 11 Israeli attacks since the start of August targeting security teams and civilians involved in distributing food, resulting in at least 46 deaths and dozens of injuries. The office stressed that these repeated strikes point to a clear pattern of intentional targeting, in violation of Israel’s obligations under international humanitarian law.
According to the UN, Israeli forces not only struck individuals securing aid convoys but also targeted Gaza’s civilian police who were not engaged in hostilities. Dozens of such attacks have been documented since the war began, contributing to the breakdown of public order around food convoys as desperation grows among the population. The UN said these assaults have worsened famine, deepened chaos, and left residents increasingly unable to access life-saving supplies.
The UN office emphasized that under international law, civilian police and aid workers are protected unless directly involved in combat, which does not apply to those guarding humanitarian supplies. It reminded Israel, as an occupying power, that it is obligated to guarantee the safety of civilians in Gaza. The office warned that continued targeting of aid security teams constitutes a direct breach of international humanitarian law and an unlawful act that accelerates starvation and displacement.
