The deadline shift marks a significant escalation in Trump’s attempt to force a negotiated end to the war. Earlier this month, he gave Putin 50 days to reach a cease-fire deal or face what he described as a “very severe” tariff regime targeting Russia’s trade partners. But on Monday, Trump stated: “We just don’t see any progress being made.”
He recounted previous conversations with Putin that he believed were promising, only to be followed by renewed Russian attacks. “You know, this has happened on too many occasions, and I don’t like it,” Trump said. He added that he was reluctant to say Putin had misled him but admitted to growing frustration.
The Trump administration recently struck a weapons deal with NATO, including Patriot missile systems for Ukraine—marking a significant policy move amid calls for more robust support to Kyiv.
During his visit to Scotland, Trump met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with whom he discussed not only Ukraine but also the conflict in Gaza. Starmer shared a proposal being developed with other European leaders to encourage Israel toward a cease-fire and improve humanitarian access to Gaza.
France has pledged recognition of a Palestinian state if fighting ends, and the U.K. said it could follow. Trump, however, declined to state his position on the matter, saying he was “not going to take a position” and responded cautiously when asked if he believed Israeli claims that there is no starvation in Gaza: “I don’t know… based on television, I would say not particularly.”
Trump stated that he was working with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to develop a plan to establish food centers in Gaza and provide funding, with contributions expected from other countries as well.
