An extended combat deployment in the Middle East has triggered a severe personnel and logistical crisis aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, Stars and Stripes reported.
Multiple sailors have reportedly attempted to jump overboard as the vessel logs a modern-era record of roughly 250 consecutive days at sea without a full port call.
The strike group departed San Diego in November 2025 for a scheduled seven-month Pacific mission.
Military commanders later redirected the carrier to the Arabian Sea to support Operation Epic Fury, a series of joint operations against Iran that began in late February 2026.
The Pentagon has since extended the deployment indefinitely.
Severe Psychological Strain
Family members indicate that the open-ended timeline and relentless combat operations have severely degraded crew morale.
Relatives disclosed multiple instances of sailors attempting to jump from the carrier in acts of attempted suicide.
Degraded Operational Conditions
The psychological toll is compounded by deteriorating logistical support for the 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard.
Crew members have endured 12- to 16-hour shifts alongside plumbing failures, limited hot water, and mold infestations.
Text messages obtained by journalist Aaron Parnas revealed the crew operated for three months without milk.
Sailors reported receiving highly rationed fresh food provisions, with some shipments arriving completely rotten.
The Navy attributed the supply deficits to regional combat operations disrupting traditional Middle Eastern logistics hubs. Service officials insist that functional air conditioning, clean water, and protein options remain consistently available.
Leadership Confrontation
More than 200 family members confronted military leadership during town hall meetings in San Diego last week.
Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao and Vice Admiral Joseph Cahill, commander of Naval Surface Forces, addressed the grievances.
“We hear you loud and clear (regarding) the impact this has on families, on service members, and the long-term ability of us to stand, sustain our forces’ health,” Cahill told attendees.
Cao indicated the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group is preparing to relieve the Lincoln.
Officials declined to provide a specific operational timeline for the transition, citing security protocols.
The escalating crisis has prompted Democratic lawmakers, including Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative Mike Levin, to demand formal investigations.
Blumenthal issued a formal letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth requesting immediate oversight regarding the vessel's operational conditions.
