Ukraine's Drones Outclassed American Armored Brigade in Exercise

Ukrainian drone operators dismantled a U.S. armored brigade during a massive military exercise in Germany earlier this year.

The simulated combat exposed severe vulnerabilities in American ground forces against short-range uncrewed aerial systems, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Heavy Armor Exposed

Around 3,500 personnel, mostly from the 1st Cavalry Division’s 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, participated in the Combined Resolve exercise.

The Fort Hood-based troops were tasked with assaulting a position defended by opposition forces.

These defending forces were heavily reinforced by the Ukrainian 412th Regiment of Unmanned Systems Forces, known as Nemesis.

Heavy armored vehicles deployed by the U.S. troops threw up massive dust plumes, immediately betraying their positions.

Ukrainian reconnaissance drones easily tracked the advancing American columns.

Attack operators subsequently launched simulated explosive-dropping and first-person-view drones.

The strikes registered as "kills" at such a rapid pace that exercise coordinators were forced to continually re-spawn the American units to keep the simulation running.

The rapid defeat underscored fundamental shifts in modern warfare.

While the U.S. pioneered long-range unmanned systems, short-range battlefield drones have dominated the static conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Strategic Deficits

The Pentagon has recently invested heavily in counter-drone technology following deadly strikes by Iranian long-range systems in the Middle East.

However, the German exercise highlighted distinct shortcomings in front-line, tactical drone defense.

Eliot Cohen, a scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, noted that uncrewed systems are now indispensable to modern combat.

“It is vital that the U.S. military master that, and thus far, unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case,” Cohen said.

American operators currently lack the critical front-line experience required to arm, repair, and deploy uncrewed aerial vehicles under direct fire.

Conventional U.S. tactics rely heavily on maneuver warfare, which demands heavy armor and constant movement.

Ukrainian military strategists contend that pervasive drone surveillance has temporarily rendered traditional maneuver warfare unfeasible.

Tactical Realignment

Following the initial devastation, the U.S. forces adapted over the two-week engagement.

Troops improved their electronic warfare deployment and learned to better conceal their positions from aerial surveillance.

Midway through the exercise, Ukrainian operators switched sides.

They began instructing American forces on offensive drone deployment and tactical countermeasures.

“You can’t get training like this in the United States,” said Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, NATO’s top military leader.

Following these joint exercises against Ukrainian forces, Grynkewich noted, “The change is remarkable.”

Washington is moving aggressively to close the operational gap. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed in May that the Pentagon is deploying additional personnel to Ukraine to study these exact battlefield tactics.

The U.S. military is not alone in its vulnerability to these novel combat methods. Swedish, British, and Estonian contingents all suffered similar rapid defeats against Ukrainian drone teams during recent European war games.
