Türkiye Warns SDF Undermines Syria’s Unity
The Ministry of National Defense said the political stance of the Syrian Democratic Forces is damaging Syria’s territorial integrity and long-term stability.
In a written statement addressing recent developments in Syria, the ministry said the SDF continues to promote decentralization and federalism while failing to take concrete steps toward integration with the country’s central authority.
The ministry stressed that this position has been raised repeatedly by Türkiye and remains a source of concern. According to the statement, Ankara views the SDF’s approach as incompatible with efforts to preserve Syria as a unified and stable state.
The Defense Ministry said Türkiye continues close cooperation with the Syria government based on the principle of “One State, One Army,” emphasizing the importance of a unified national structure.
It added that Ankara is closely monitoring ongoing integration efforts between Damascus and armed elements operating outside the central chain of command.
The statement underlined that strengthening central authority is essential for restoring security and political coherence in Syria.
Türkiye’s position, the ministry said, prioritizes institutional unity over fragmented governance or parallel security structures.
Ankara also delivered a clear political message to Damascus.
The Defense Ministry said that if the Syrian government decides to take an initiative aimed at preserving the country’s unity and territorial integrity, Türkiye would support such a move.
The message signals that Türkiye’s backing is tied to concrete steps toward national consolidation rather than decentralization.
