U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Pentagon’s reported $200 billion funding request related to the ongoing Iran conflict is not final and may be revised, as military operations continue to drive up costs and resource demands.
Hegseth confirmed that discussions are ongoing with Congress regarding additional funding to support military operations and replenish equipment used in the conflict. He emphasized that the reported figure, first cited by media outlets, is not definitive and remains subject to change depending on operational needs.
According to U.S. officials, the Iran conflict, which began in late February 2026, has already incurred significant expenses estimated in the billions of dollars. Administration figures suggest approximately $12 billion has been spent so far, reflecting the scale of sustained military engagement.
Any large-scale funding request is expected to face scrutiny on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers from both parties may question the necessity and allocation of such a substantial amount. Some officials have already described the reported figure as unusually high, given the Pentagon’s existing budget levels.
Hegseth noted that additional funding would be used to accelerate weapons production, maintain adequate ammunition supplies, and ensure readiness for ongoing and potential future operations. He stressed the importance of sustaining military capability while managing depleted stockpiles.
