China has sharply criticized the U.S.-Israeli military strikes on Iran, urging an immediate halt to the attacks and warning that the escalation risks derailing diplomatic progress and destabilizing the region.
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar on Tuesday that Beijing opposes the U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran and urged an immediate cessation of military operations.
According to a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry, Wang said the strikes interrupted diplomatic progress between Washington and Tehran. He noted that negotiations had already “made significant progress, including addressing Israel’s security concerns.”
“China opposes any military strikes launched by Israel and the US against Iran,” Wang said during the phone call.
He warned that the military escalation risks spiraling beyond control. “China calls for an immediate cessation of military operations to prevent the further escalation and loss of control of the conflict,” Wang added.
Wang emphasized that diplomacy, not force, should guide efforts to resolve tensions around Iran’s nuclear program and regional security concerns.
“Force cannot truly solve problems; instead, it will bring new problems and serious long-term consequences,” he said.
China’s diplomatic intervention comes as the conflict expands following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran that began Saturday. The attacks have triggered retaliatory actions across the region and raised fears of a broader Middle East confrontation.
Chinese officials have framed the strikes as a disruption to negotiations that had been progressing prior to the escalation.
Beijing has also stepped up diplomatic contacts with multiple regional and international actors. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang spoke Monday with the foreign ministers of Iran, Oman and France to discuss the crisis and possible paths toward de-escalation.
The ministry said Saar agreed during Tuesday’s call to take “concrete measures to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel and institutions” in Iran.
The statements from Beijing underscore rising international concern that the military confrontation could expand into a wider regional war. Chinese officials have repeatedly emphasized the need for negotiations to resume and for hostilities to stop before the conflict escalates further.
