Slovakia’s Fico Eyes Deal On Russia Gas Ban And EU Sanctions

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said Bratislava could lift its block on the EU’s new Russia sanctions package if a deal is reached by Tuesday to mitigate the economic impact of ending Russian gas imports by 2028.

Speaking in Bratislava, Fico stated that Slovakia is willing to support the EU’s proposed sanctions, but only if the country’s economic vulnerability is acknowledged. “We need to win something in this fight,” Fico said, insisting that burden-sharing must be part of the arrangement.

The EU’s new sanctions round includes a plan to end all Russian gas imports by 2028. Slovakia, which relies on Russia for the majority of its gas, fears that the measure could severely damage its economy if alternatives are not made affordable and accessible.

Fico revealed he had spoken with German and Polish leaders to find a compromise, including a potential cap on fees for alternative gas transit routes.

EU Presses Ahead With Energy Sanctions

The European Commission proposed the latest sanctions last month, aiming to cut Moscow’s revenue from energy, banking, and the arms industry. Slovakia is the last major holdout in the bloc.

Fico stressed the urgency of reaching an agreement before the EU foreign ministers meet in Brussels on Tuesday, warning that “tensions are rising on all sides.” The deal would require Slovakia to receive concrete commitments that it will not shoulder the cost of the transition alone.

If the deal is struck, Slovakia is expected to approve the sanctions package, unlocking a key piece of the EU’s broader strategy to increase pressure on Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
