The European Union’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas issued a stark warning on Monday, calling any Iranian move to close the Strait of Hormuz “extremely dangerous,” as Tehran’s leadership considers retaliatory options in the wake of U.S. and Israeli strikes.
Strategic Chokepoint Under Threat
Speaking ahead of an EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels, Kallas emphasized that closing the strait would destabilize global trade and energy markets. “It is not good for anybody,” she told reporters.
Her comments came as Iran’s Press TV reported that the Supreme National Security Council was deliberating on a final decision regarding the closure, following reported support from Iranian lawmakers.
Global Stakes: Oil, Gas, and War
Roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas shipments pass through the Strait of Hormuz daily. A closure would not only disrupt global energy supply chains but likely invite military confrontation with the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet and Gulf allies.
While Iranian officials have not officially ordered the move, threats to block the strait are seen as one of Tehran’s most potent retaliatory tools amid heightened conflict.
EU Urges Restraint
The EU has consistently called for de-escalation, warning that further military action risks a broader regional war. European officials also fear that a Hormuz shutdown could derail diplomatic tracks with Iran and further destabilize global energy security.
