Three unidentified projectiles struck Iraq’s Kirkuk airport around 11:30 p.m. local time on Monday, wounding one person and causing a brief fire, airport authorities confirmed in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA). Two of the rockets landed in the military section of the airport, while a third hit the civilian area.
The blast caused a brush fire near a gate beside the military zone, but it was rapidly extinguished by airport fire crews.
Airport Operations Unaffected
Airport management said the runway and other infrastructure were undamaged, and all flight operations remained fully functional. “All airport components remain fully operational,” the official statement noted.
Security forces from the Kirkuk Operations Command quickly secured the area and confirmed there was no ongoing threat.
Katyusha Rockets Used in Attack
Iraqi security sources told INA that the rockets used were of the Katyusha type. One rocket reportedly fell between the first and second runways, while another struck a house in Kirkuk’s Al-Orouba neighborhood. No casualties were reported from the civilian impact.
Authorities have not yet identified the perpetrators, and no group has claimed responsibility for the strike.
